WHEN HEROES GO

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 28, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

Its not the first time a musician I admired, respected, and was awe struck by, has passed away. There were the untimely deaths of Pete Ham, Ronnie Van Zandt, Lowell George, John Lennon, Randy (California) Wolfe, George Harrison, Freddy Mercury, and I am sure, many more. So, what is it that has me so disturbed and disheartened by the recent deaths of so many musicians?

In the past 18 months or so, we have lost, among others, Jesse Winchester, Jack Bruce (Cream), Chris Squire (Yes), Lemmy, David Bowie, Dale Griffin (Mott The Hoople), Glen Frey (The Eagles), Paul Kantner (Jefferson Airplane),  Merle Haggard, and Prince. What the hell is going on? I was fortunate to have met some, was a fan of them all, and considered myself a contemporary of many. I grew up with the music of most of them, and carried it with me throughout my adult life. There are songs by these artists that will forever be etched in my memories, as one of those, ‘this is what I was listening to when…’, or ‘this is what I was doing the first time I heard….’ moments.

Perhaps it is my own mortality that is being thrown in my face, as I am just about the same age as most of them. Maybe it is the realization that the talent pool on this planet is being depleted faster than it can be replaced. Or maybe it is simply the understanding that my heroes were, in fact, only human.

I am deeply saddened by it all. I have been spending a great deal of time listening to the music these giants have created, maybe reliving my youth, but also to ingest the insanely wonderful legacy they have left for me. The memories, the emotions, the thoughts that each song creates in me will never wane. I am saddened. I am hurt. It is so very hard to say goodbye to a hero.

Set for release in late 2016 or early 2017, the quintessential New Jersey garage rockers are busy laying down tracks for a uniquely original album. Their sound, influenced by the likes of The Stooges, The New York Dolls, and The Ramones, has them receiving international radio play, and a deluge of interview requests. TSINDER ASH-The Carbon Of Your Delight

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 22, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

tsinderI like experimental music. Hell, I like eccentric, and eclectic music.  Listening to Tsinder Ash‘s 2015 release, The Carbon Of Your Delight, reminds me why.  This London, U.K. artist is mega talented; as a songwriter, a singer, and a musician. The album contains wonderfully diverse instrumentation and arrangements, with melancholic vocals, that deliver dark, brooding lyrics. The melodies are incredibly captivating, almost hypnotic, even though they seem to fall on the far side of centre. There are shades of eastern musical influences, with a Leonard Cohen thing going on, set within an alternative folk-blues vibe that is quite possibly not from this world! There are dynamite additional vocals from Clara Engel, and a myriad of instruments I do not regularly hear. An insanely good album, that will mess with your mind, as it soothes your soul.  I can’t wait for the release of the next album, which, I am told, is coming soon. If it is not tomorrow, it is not soon enough. Give this a few listens on his bandcamp page, and then, purchase yourself a copy. Definitely one for the collection.

GET TO KNOW THE EASY OUTS….

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 20, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

easyoutsSince the release of their 2015 album, Desolate Row, New Jersey garage rockers, The Easy Outs, have been making quite a name for themselves. And rightfully so. With tracks that breathe life back into rock ‘n’ roll, and guest appearances on the album by the likes of Kurt Reil (The Grip Weeds), Dave DeSantos (The Grip Weeds, Secret Syde), and Kenny Aaronson (Joan Jett, New York Dolls, Derringer), the band has earned some credibility. Forming in 2008, The Easy Outs released a self titled debut album in 2009, to some critical acclaim. In 2010, their single ‘Come On Come On’ was released, and appeared on ESPN NASCAR.  Desolate Row has been receiving regular airplay across the United States, Canada, and The Easy Out virus has most recently spread to Europe. This could very well become a world wide pandemic! One listen, and you will catch it! Currently the band has returned to the studio, recording tracks for their next album, to be released in 2017.

And so, after fielding requests for information about the band, and its members, it is time to get to know The Easy Outs.

easyouts30BRUCE FERGUSON—-Vocals

The singer/songwriter was born in New Jersey, with Rock ‘n’ Roll coursing through his veins, in 4/4 time. Bruce began his music career in 1986, with the band The Garden Insane. In 2001, he formed Trench, who released 2 albums to some critical acclaim. He appeared in the 2007 blockbuster film, Fans Anonymous, and was the vocalist for the New Jersey super group, The Satisfactors, with Kenny Aaronson, and Kurt Reil. The Satisfactors released an album in 2014. Bruce plans on releasing a solo project sometime in the future.

easyouts37JOHN DIVUOLO——-Bass/Backing Vocals

Another Jersey native, John was born into a musical family: His mother was a classically trained pianist, and his father, an A-Capella singer. John has been involved in the Jersey Shore cover band scene since 2001, and has played in several bands including The Cheap & Easy Band, The Stop Hear Band, Lode, and Slow Kids At Play. John joined The Easy Outs in 2012.

easyouts34PAUL LAMBERT——–Drums

Paul is a native of Brooklyn, New York, the son of a professional trumpet player, and began playing drums at age 15. His straight forward, hard hitting style allows him to lay down a rock solid rhythmic foundation for The Easy Outs. Who are we to argue?

easyouts36MIKE DEPASQUALE—-Guitar

Mike is Jersey born and bred, and began playing in bands while he was in High School. While playing covers, Mike secretly desired to play original music. A call from The Easy Outs made his dream come true, and the rest, well, is history.

easyouts33STEVE DEVITO———-Guitar

Another son of New Jersey, Steve began his venture into music by singing in church choirs while in elementary school. At age 18, Steve joined The Secret Syde, whose album Hidden Secrets received airplay on several college radio stations. Averaging over 100 live performances per year, Steve has shared the stage with Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), Rick Danko (The Band), and Toy Caldwell (The Marshall Turker Band). He joined The Easy Outs in 2011.

Well, there they are. The Easy Outs!  If you don’t have a copy of BOTH of The Easy Outs albums, you can get them here. Do yourself, and your friends, and neighbors a favor. GET THE EASY OUTS HERE! And while you’re at it, you should probably pick up a way cool t shirt or 2.

CLARA ENGEL-Visitors Are Allowed One Kiss

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 15, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

The 5 track album, Visitors Are Allowed One Kiss, released by Clara Engel in April 2016, has captivated and fascinated me. The Toronto cesinger/songwriter/musician has delivered an exciting, and yes, eccentric, collection of songs that I have not been able to stop listening to. There are hauntingly beautiful melodies, enhanced by a minimalist approach, that is  both soothing and exciting, and serene, yet intoxicating. The simplistic complexity of the avant-garde folk-blues, creates powerful emotions and images. There are wonderfully cool instruments being played; bowed baritone guitar, auto harp, vibes, theremin, as well as  violin, saxophone, and xylophone. The vocals tracks are exceptional, while the sound is uniquely original, fusing Delta Blues, Folk, and Alternative. There is so much going on in here, that it requires numerous listens to integrate the essence of what has been created. I could listen to this all day. Could very well contend for I Can’t Believe My Earz Indie Album Of The Year for 2016. Highly recommended that you check out this, and all of Clara Engel’s other releases out on her bandcamp page.

SIDEWATCHER-Otra Vez

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 12, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

sidewatcherDetroit based pop-garage-punk band, Sidewatcher, has come up with a novel idea for the release of their new album, Otra Vez. The 14 track project will be released as 7 color coded singles. The 1st 2 singles are out, released in January and February, 2016 respectively, and I like what I hear.

Keys To Your Heart‘, and ‘I Really Like You‘ appear on Otra Vez l. While Otra Vez ll, contains the songs ‘ Hey You‘, and ‘Have Love Will Travel‘. There are wonderful melodies, cool changes, and sweet vocals. I heard dynamite piano and organ, and nice riffs. The songs are pop, with a punk edge and elements of surf, garage, and psych rock. The sound is excitingly addictive. A very cool band with a very cool sound. Looking forward to the next single release! You can check SideWatcher out for yourself on their bandcamp page.

HAZEN SAGE -Thrive

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

hazen2I have been listening to Hazen Sage‘s new release for over 1 week. The Vancouver Island singer/songwriter released Thrive in March, 2016, and I am digging this 11 track album. The songs deliver wonderful melodies, with inspired lyrics. There are way cool surprises, tremelo, organ, and piano, and influences of rock, reggae, aboriginal, western, and psych rock are evident throughout. There are cool riffs, and infectious hooks, accompanied by great changes, and dynamite vocals. Favorite tracks: ‘Dead ‘n Gone‘( with shades of Buffalo Springfield), ‘Undying‘, and ‘Tea For Two‘.

Thrive is quite addictive, really, filled with thought provoking, mind bending hazeninsanely good songs, written and performed with passion and devotion. The arrangements & production are spot on, and I like the “fullness’ of the sound. There are wonderful things going on in here. There is never a dull moment! Give Thrive a listen, or perhaps several, and then buy a bunch of copies. A wonderfully exciting album, you should play for the whole neighborhood. Destined to be on the short list for I Can’t Believe My Earz‘s Album Of The Year for 2016.
