FAREWELL STANLEYS-Good Company

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 3, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

fs1The 1st review ever written by I Can’t Believe My Earz was of London, Ontario’s, The Creekside Strays. It seems only fitting then, that the 1st review of 2016 be on Farewell Stanleys, a new side project of Creekside Strayers Justin & Jeremy, and their pal, Mark Milanovic.

The recently released album, “Good Company“, offers a folk-pop sound, with fs2alternative sentiments. The songs are wonderfully written, with introspective and touching lyrics, set within an acoustic framework. There are way cool pop melodies, great changes and transitions, and dynamite harmonies. The arrangements are wonderfully suited to the minimalist instrumentation, which places the focus entirely n the songs, and the percussion is exceptional.  Melodic and accessible, the sound falls somewhere between The Beatles “Rubber Soul”, and Loggins & Messina. One listen is just not enough. Favorite tracks: ‘Olivia‘, and ‘Said And Done‘. You can listen and purchase “Good Company” here.

ANDREW WAITE & THE FIRM-Burning Through The Night

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 16, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

Andrew Waite & The Firm were, until recently, unknown to me. What I heard on “Burning Through The Night“,  released in Septemeber 2015, has made me a fan. A wonderful blend of Roots, Pop, and Prince Edward Island Folk music, this band has created a sound that is intoxicating and addictive.

AW & The Firm2The way cool organ, and saxophone on ‘Someone To Hold Me‘, is a wonderfully pleasant addition to a great melody, and sweet acoustic guitar. ‘Burning Through The Night‘ offers a killer vocal track with cool harmonies, and some great changes. The mandolin on ‘Immaterial World‘ is beautifully placed among the incredibly touching lyric, subtle horns, and dynamite keys. The cool effects during the intro don’t hurt! This is the song I will be dancing with my wife to as we sway around the house!! ‘Little Bird‘ gives us wonderful organ throughout, laying just under the melody. The guitar is wonderfully acoustic, and the harmonies,  perfect. ‘Alone Apart‘ offers more saxophone among cool guitar effects, a wonderful chorus, and exceptional harmonies & backing vocals. My favorite track, ‘There’s A Light On‘ has dynamite horns, a way cool riff, and great organ. The song is insanely melodic, with a wonderful chorus. Reminiscent of Mellancamp’s “Scarecrow” days.

AWand The FirmBurning Through The Night is wonderfully soothing & melodic. A return to the singer-songwriter days, with songs filled with heartfelt stories that resonate with me. The vocals are unique, and I dig the raspiness in Andrew Waite’s voice. The arrangements rock, and the horns & organ are a delightful. Andrew Waite & The Firm could very well be the next Blue Rodeo!! A band to watch. A band to listen to!! The album is a wonderfully satisfying journey that I plan on taking regularly. I suspect that I will have to make an endless loop as I can’t see myself getting tired of this. Check it out for yourself.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 10, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

mutant bird2Multi instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter, Johnny Rock, an American now hanging out in London, recently released an EP as Mutant Bird. The 5 track ‘Sugar Voodoo‘ incorporates several genres, merging them into a sound thatcan only be called Psychedelic Rock Hop.

The album opens with ‘Muzzle Dust‘, a wonderfully rhythmic track with amazing guitar, some way cool effects, and a dynamite vocal track. ‘Shoot Up“, offers beautiful acoustic guitar, sweet keyboards, and interesting changes. I am almost certain I heard a cello on this track!! The cool riff on ‘Sugar Voodoo‘ acts as the perfect counterbalance to the primitive beat, and I dig the backing vocals. The horn sounds and hand clapping enhance the wonderful Middle Eastern vibe of ‘The Return‘, and ‘Space Junk‘ rocks with its way cool effects and great rhythm tracks.  Favorite track: ‘Shoot Up’.

mutant birdSugar Voodoo delivers a powerfully full sound, which embraces and infects my senses. The effects are tasteful, never overpowering the myriad of insanely incredible things going on in each track. The music is exciting, with an original sound that reminds me of what creativity is about. A wonderful time. You can check the EP out here, and then I suggest you purchase it, and show your friends something amazing that you have uncovered.

THE QUIET THINGS-The Fall

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

thequietthings2Toronto pop-rocksters, The Quiet Things released ‘The Fall‘ in March 2015. An amazing album, filled with incredible power pop songs from one of my new favorite bands. The tracks contain wonderful melodies, great changes, and dynamite arrangements. The vocals and harmonies rock, and I was impressed with the acoustic/electric mix throughout. Highlights include ‘Charmer“, with great changes, way cool guitar effects, and sweet harmonies; the energy of ‘Kiss On The Mouth‘; ‘One‘, with its brilliant acoustic-electric blend; and my favorite track, ‘The Fall ll‘, offers wonderful tempo changes, dynamite vocals, and a guitar solo, that will make you get your lighters out! And don’t forget to check out the riff on the extended version of ‘Secrets‘.

the quiet things1I am liking this album. The vocals are wonderful, and the songs are exceptional. Incredibly original music, with the ability to create mood. The songs are wonderfully original, unique, and way cool. From beginning to end, it will have you tapping your feet, and trying to sing along. It gets inside you, and you just can’t get it out! Not a bad thing though, since The Fall is insanely good!  Definitely a must have album, and certainly in contention for the I Can’t Believe My Earz Indie Album of The Year for 2015. Check out and like The Quiet Things on facebook,  and listen to and order 3 or 4 copies of The Fall.  http://thequietthingsmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-fall Give a few to your friends. jeffery brosOttawa, Ontario based The Jeffery Brothers Band are set to release their album “Let’s Rock Let’s Roll” on August 31. Filled with driving rhythm tracks, exciting guitar, and powerful vocals, the album is a wonderful journey into hard core power rock. The songs are well written, with great changes, and infectious and addictive hooks from beginning to end. On more than one occasion I found myself getting out my jeffery bros2air guitar, to play along with the way cool riffs and electrifying solos. These guys know rock! Carrying the torch lit by the likes of AC/DC, The Jeffery Brothers Band have the formula for in your face, raucous rock and roll. THE BLANK TAPES-Geodesic Dome Piece

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 19, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

blanktapes1California’s The Blank Tapes released ‘Geodesic Dome Piece‘ in January 2015 with 12 tracks of 1960’s pop that sounds like it stepped out of another dimension. Sort of Paul Revere & The Raiders meet The Twilight Zone! The sound is infectious.  From the opening chords of “Way Too Stoned“, with its ethereal,  dream like vibe, I was taken away by 60’s pop melodies, great harmonies, cool effects, and insanely exciting riffs (check out “For Breakfast” and “Buff“). There are wonderful changes, particularly in “Brown Chicken Brown Cow“, and way cool mandolin on “To Your Dome Piece“. The album is filled with surprises, including wonderful guitar and saxophone solos on “Slippin’ Slide“, and a jangly surf-pop vibe to “Oh My Muzak“. Favorite track “Do You Wanna Get High“, with its dynamite pop chorus, an amazing change in key, and lyrics that include ‘do you wanna get high, just like Chucky and me, cause we’re likely to be all the time’.

bt1I could listen to this for days on end, and have spent the better part of 2 weeks digesting the entire The Blanks Tape catalog. The songs make me feel like I did in 1969. The album is wonderfully arranged and produced. The vocals are wonderful, and the lyrics, sardonic and witty. There is an acoustic demo version of “Do You Wanna Get High” as a bonus, and “To Your Dome Piece” is worth a few listens just for the lyrical phrasing.. This is one of those must have albums. The kind that you have to have in your collection, just because it was done. Bizarro-garage-psychedelic-stoner-surf-pop at its best.

THE CREEKSIDE STRAYS-Blacklisted

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 26, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

It has been long time since The Creekside Strays released an album. Almost 2 years. After listening to their January, 2015 release, ‘Blacklisted‘, it was worth the wait. Which ever one of the Strays came up with the idea to release an album with an acoustic side, I am eternally grateful. Brilliant idea.

cs6The ‘A’ side is the electric side . The cool jazz-funk beat of “Ms. Hunter” is overshadowed only by the wonderful melody. The blues-rock “Hey, Grave Digger“, has an amazing fuzz bass line, and a little Stevie Ray Vaughan  thing going on. “Guilty Parties” delivers way cool vocals, and some double tracking. The changes in “Live This Down” rock, and “Begin To Heal” offers a dynamite melody. “Sucker Boy Blues” gives up great blues riffs, and exciting changes.

cs22The acoustic ‘B’ side surprised and impressed me. I heard strings, and a cello in “Blacklisted Interlude“, and maracas and possibly bongos in “Wet Palms“. The wonderful change of key in “Took A While“, and the cool effects in “Let Him Go“, amazing. “Once Again” offers sweet harmonies, and a great riff and solo in an incredibly beautiful song. “Recycled Man” gives us some of the best female vocals I have heard in a long, long time, while”Unfold” has a way cool 1980’s folk-pop-rock, sort of Sugar Ray feel. Stand out track.

cs2I am trying to figure out why The Creekside Strays are not a household name. They should be!! Blacklisted is an eclectic collection of incredible songs, with blues, jazz, funk, pop, rock, and folk elements. And they just keep getting better. This album demonstrates their maturity as songwriters, arrangers, and producers, and highlights the sophisticated simplicity of their songs. A dynamite album, and a wonderful time. A definite early contender for the I Can’t Believe My Earz 2015 Indie Album Of The Year. I suggested you grab yourself a copy, or 2. You should also check earlier The Creekside Strays releases.
