PROPELLER-Fall Off The World

propellerThe January 2016 release of “Fall Off The World“, by Propeller, has me wondering why it took me so long to find this California band. This insanely good album, filled with 10 tracks of perfectly crafted Powerpop, has me made a fan. The melodies are wonderful, blanketed in sweet harmonies and backing vocals. The riffs and solos are dynamite, and the hooks, unforgettable. There are great changes, some way cool effects, and amazing vocal tracks. I heard exciting bass lines, and a way cool punk vibe in ‘Turn On The Radio‘, a tribute to The Ramones. The songs are 2-3 minutes, and are destined to be Powerpop classics; simple & basic, but they just don’t leave your head! At times, I am reminded of The Romantics, and The Knack. The album is insanely cool, like a 1980’s Powerpop dance party. You can stream it & buy it on the band’s bandcamp page. I suggest you get 2 or 3. It is that good. Clearly headed for a place on the 2016 I Can’t Believe My Earz 2016 Indie Album Of The Year. Favorite tracks: ‘The Things You Say‘; ‘Its Kinda Why I Like You‘; ‘Can’t Feel These Things‘.

THE BLANK TAPES-Geodesic Dome Piece

blanktapes1California’s The Blank Tapes released ‘Geodesic Dome Piece‘ in January 2015 with 12 tracks of 1960’s pop that sounds like it stepped out of another dimension. Sort of Paul Revere & The Raiders meet The Twilight Zone! The sound is infectious.  From the opening chords of “Way Too Stoned“, with its ethereal,  dream like vibe, I was taken away by 60’s pop melodies, great harmonies, cool effects, and insanely exciting riffs (check out “For Breakfast” and “Buff“). There are wonderful changes, particularly in “Brown Chicken Brown Cow“, and way cool mandolin on “To Your Dome Piece“. The album is filled with surprises, including wonderful guitar and saxophone solos on “Slippin’ Slide“, and a jangly surf-pop vibe to “Oh My Muzak“. Favorite track “Do You Wanna Get High“, with its dynamite pop chorus, an amazing change in key, and lyrics that include ‘do you wanna get high, just like Chucky and me, cause we’re likely to be all the time’.

bt1I could listen to this for days on end, and have spent the better part of 2 weeks digesting the entire The Blanks Tape catalog. The songs make me feel like I did in 1969. The album is wonderfully arranged and produced. The vocals are wonderful, and the lyrics, sardonic and witty. There is an acoustic demo version of “Do You Wanna Get High” as a bonus, and “To Your Dome Piece” is worth a few listens just for the lyrical phrasing.. This is one of those must have albums. The kind that you have to have in your collection, just because it was done. Bizarro-garage-psychedelic-stoner-surf-pop at its best.

THE AFTER HOURS-Shaken, Not Stirred

afterhours2I was beginning to think that the only way I was going to find any decent pop music to listen to, was to focus on bands from the U.K. Until now. The After Hours, hailing from Los Angeles, have released a dynamite album, “Shaken, Not Stirred“, that has restored my faith in the resurgence of classic pop on this side of the Atlantic.

There is an amazing 1960’s surf music feel to “Here To Stay“, with its cool guitar riff and solo that involves a whammy bar! The melody & harmonies are pure California pop, and the unforgettable hook is surpassed only by the “big finish” and by the different guitar sounds within this track. “Going To The Go Go“, with its 1950’s rock & roll/garage style, has a dynamite bass line, and way cool harmonica. The changes and bridge are nice, the riff amazing, and the harmonies have me wondering which part I should sing. A wonderful pop song, “Keep Her Satisfied“, has amazing harmonies, a great melody and a sweet 1960’s feel. The guitar is after hours1particularly amazing. “The Lonely Boys“, with its power-pop/rock ‘n’ roll style offers a great vocal track, a cool melody with great harmonies, and dynamite changes. The guitar kills, and I dig the hand clapping. My favorite track on the album, “Kaliedoscopic“, is pure 1960’s psych rock/pop, sort of The Monkees going psychedelic. The harmonies which are utilized as an additional instrument, and vocals are dynamite. The changes and effects, perfect. The drumming rocks and the mysical bridge that incorporates organ is wonderful. The way cool riff makes this song. Check it out!

afterhours3I really like this band, The After Hours. I am a fan! They cite among their many influences The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Zombies, The Hollies and The Turtles. Is it any wonder their music has wonderful 1960’s melodies, harmonies and riffs?  The vocals and the guitar work stand out. “Shaken, Not Stirred” captures the essence of 60’s music. The songs are wonderfully written, and demonstrate a remarkable ability to integrate all of their influences into one cohesive and coherent sound. This is a must have album. I will be getting 2, as I am certain I will be playing 1 of them into oblivion.
