I wish that I had discovered Nadine Shah sooner. The London, England singer/songwriter released her 10 track album, Fast Food, in April 2015, and it is simply amazing!

ns2The songs contain wonderful melodies, great changes & transitions, and a wonderfully heavy rhythm section. I heard the sound of horns, acoustic guitar, organ, and piano. There are cool effects, great harmonies, and some way cool guitar throughout. There is a great Parisian Cabaret vibe to ‘Fast Food‘, and a wonderful mid-east sensibility to ‘Matador‘. The album offers changes & transitions that seem effortless. The vocals are insanely good, darkly emotional, smoky & sultry. The instrumentation is wonderfully simple within a song that is complex, and the production is exceptional. Favorite tracks include ‘Divided‘, a beautiful song with a dynamite melody sung over acoustic guitar and tom; ‘Big Hands‘, with way cool keys, and a melody that delivers Nadine Shah’s devastatingly wonderful voice; and ‘Stealing Cars‘, with its unforgettable riff, is as addictive as any song I have heard!

ns1Nadine Shah has a style all of her own. Unforgettable and unmistakable! Beautiful & sublime. The songs are wonderfully written, and have been driving some to move uncontrollably. I dig this album. It is wonderfully eclectic. It is alternative. Alternative cool. Alternative wonderful. You can pick it up for the ‘name your price’ fee on Bandcamp. Pay what you can. Get it today!

NEVERFRIEND-Evolve

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 25, 2014 by TheManicBlogger

neverfriend1I had the pleasure of previewing ‘Evolve‘, the new album from Neverfriend, an Ottawa, Canada based band. Scheduled for for release in mid December, 2014, this disc simply kicks ass.

The album opens with “Coming For Me“, a dynamite rock song with wonderful changes, and cool guitar. “Hard To Breathe“, with its great melody, and strong vocal track, turns out to be a wonderful ‘punk’ ballad. The nice changes and effects give the straight ahead rock track “Don’t Want To Love You” , another dimension. The vocals, and wicked guitar solo are added bonuses. “Take A Stand” has cool effects, nice drum fills, and some sweet riffs. The chorus rocks with  harmonies, and the change in tempo, well, its a pleasant surprise. The hard rock feel of  “Pissed Off & Running” delivers a great bridge, cool changes, and a beautiful chorus. I like the production values in this track. “Tell Someone Who Cares” carries an almost metal vibe, yet offers a way cool melody, and sweet chorus. The vocals are terrific, and I dig the harmonies. There are more amazing neverfriend3changes in “Everything That’s Wrong For Me“, as it roars through powerful instrumentation, and a cool melody. There are 2 standout tracks. “Dear Daddy“, with its broody, melancholia, offers a wonderful riff, and sweet harmonies. The song utilizes vocals and guitars only, and the vocals simply rock. This delicately complex track is still playing in my head. And then there is “Don’t Worry“. With its unforgettable pop melody, way cool chorus and harmonies, great changes, and sweet guitar solo, this song reminds of what the GoGos would sound like playing punk. An incredible track.

neverfriend2Neverfriend delivers a raw, energetic, yet sophisticated album. Combining elements of pop, punk, and hard rock, the songs never seem to disappoint. Pop melodies with punk/rock instrumentation. Way cool. I like the sound. I like the songs. I like the band.  Get ready for the release, and get yourself at least 1.

MESSES AND MIRACLES-The Captain Surely Drowns

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 21, 2013 by TheManicBlogger

M&M1On the heels of their 2012 debut Ep, A Place To Hang Our Heads, London, Ontario band Messes & Miracles released the 5 track EP The Captain Surely Drowns in August of this year.

This Folk-Rock band has matured since the release of their debut EP. Their acoustic rock sound, influenced by folk music is evident in the melody of “All We Are“,which features choral harmonies, and great transitions. The simple yet melodic guitar riff, makes this song. The title track, with its great changes and strong harmonies, serves as a wonderful lead in to the rockier “Dead Eyes” which uses power chords within a softer, acoustic theme. The vocals, coming in short bursts, are interesting and unique. “Daggers has the signature harmonies, a nice riff, and a fun melody. I like the piano used here and the changes in tempo are an added bonus. My favorite track on the album, “Angry World”, is an incredibly well crafted song. The ballad has a beautiful melody, framed by lush harmonies and a soft and easy guitar riff, making this song warm and infectious.

M&MMesses And Miracles are  a remarkable band.  They have a unique sound, and write songs that tell stories.  The album is filled with light songs that have heavy themes. It is beautifully  simple, subtle with complex textures. There is not much missing here, except perhaps another 5 or 6 tracks to listen to. This EP has been put into my regular listening rotation.
