THE COUNTERACTS-Meet The Counteracts

the counteracts3In 1964, I was listening to Meet The Beatles. 52 years later, I have been listening to The Counteracts ep, “Meet The Counteracts“. Coincidence? I don’t think so. The tribute to The Beatles is evident not only in the release’s title, but the cover design, as well. The duo from Kent, UK, have their heart and soul in Brit pop. A cursory listen to the album will confirm this, however I recommend paying close attention, and give it several listens. There are wonderful pop melodies, cool hooks, nice harmonies, and some dynamite keyboards. I am particularly fond of the piano. The vocal arrangements are sweet, and I dig the hand clapping on ‘The Postbus‘. There is a way cool dreamy vibe and Lennonesque feel (particularly in the bridge)  to ‘You Never Listen‘, and ‘Everyone Gets The Chance (To Love)’, has a wonderful The Kinks thing going on. And, as if the album cover was not enough, the homage to The Beatles version of Twist & Shout at the end of ‘I’ve Got A Crush On You‘, is inspired. I like this band. I like this album. A wonderfully uplifting and fun time, filled with quirky Brit. pop. Check it out for yourself on their bandcamp page, and pay what you can for your very own download….

THE SLEEPOVERS

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 25, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

the sleepoversI’m not certain why it took me so long to discover The Sleepovers, but the recent release of this Toronto band’s final installment of their 3 color ep series, caught my attention. So much so that I went back and listened to the other 2.

The songs are insanely good, filled with wonderful pop melodies and harmonies. There are way cool keys, some slick guitar, and a solid rhythm section. The vocals are dynamite, and there are added bonuses of hand clapping, and cool effects. The changes are great, and the bridges, exceptional. There are influences of 1980’s New Wave, Punk, and Power Pop. There are hints of funk, R & B, and electro-pop. It all works here. The elements of several genres incredibly fused with pop. It is complex simplicity. And they seem to be having a whack of fun doing it! After listening several times, I am a fan. .  Our favorite tracks across the 3 EPs: pink-“Friends Without Benefits“; blue-“Bomb“;  yellow-“Death By Misadventure“.  You need to check this band out for yourself. Really!! You can listen to the entire trilogy-2014’s pink EP, the blue EP of 2015, and the January 2016 yellow EP, and purchase them all, on Bandcamp.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 19, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

paperwolf1Colin Marshall, ex drummer of The Toniks, has found himself in a new band, Paperwolf. The power trio from Bromley, England, recently released  “Been Five Years“, a 4 track ep filled with wonderful melodies, and some cool changes. The guitar centric sound, at times reminiscent of The James Gang, delivers powerful drumming, strong bass lines, and power chords, interspersed with great licks, cool solos, and unforgettable riffs. Wonderfully heavy, straight ahead rock. Definitely something you need to check out for yourself. Pay attention to Paperwolf- a way cool power trio with heart & soul. Favorite track: ‘Jenny‘. Listen here.

kmaAnother kick ass Dublin, Ireland band, Kiss My Acid, released their debut ep, Individuality, in September, 2015.  The 5 tracks are wonderfully powerful, with cool melodies, and dynamite changes. Exciting bass lines, and dynamite vocals enhance the blistering power chords. There are some cool vocal effects, and the drumming never lets up. There are no frills here. No bells and no whistles. Just cool songs filled with angst & anger. Hard driving, this is pure raw energy. Pure power punk! Favorite track: ‘Revolution’, with its cool vocals, nice changes & transitions, and an in your face vibe, could be a new punk anthem! Check it out here, and then buy yourself a copy. You won’t be sorry!

JAPANESE TONGUE SISTERS-Peacock

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 23, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

jts33Japanese Tongue Sisters, based in Melbourne, Australia, released ‘Peacock‘, a 5 track ep in September 2015. The songs are wonderfully written, filled with amazing changes, great melodies, and wonderfully touching lyrics.

All I Can Regret‘ is excitingly acoustic, with a dynamite string sound, and terrific vocals. The keys on ‘Lose My Head‘ are wonderful, while ‘Perfect Stain‘ delivers a way cool 1980’s electro-pop vibe. ‘Heartbreak Tango‘ has some amazing piano, and I dig the echo. My favorite track, ‘Ma’s New House‘, offers a sweet acoustic track under what sounds like slide guitar, some wonderful harmonies, and a cool country feel.

The album has an ethereal feel, yet delivers a full sound. There are tasteful effects blended into an eclectic ‘Roo Pop‘ sound. A wonderful album with so much going on, it will require several listens to catch it all. Check it out for yourself, and then buy a few copies-share it with your family and friends. Christmas is coming, right?

THE ROTTEN MANGOS

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 30, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

rotten mangos3The Rotten Mangos, a way cool band from Austin, Texas, released their self titled EP in November, 2014. Luckily I found it. The album is, well, Popedelic!

The opening track, ‘Tent Rentals‘ offers a dynamite vocal track with way cool effects, a great bass line, and a sweet melody. ‘Pacify Your Mind‘ has exceptional changes, and a wonderful riff, while ‘Krishna’s Theme‘ delivers a brilliant twang from a steel guitar, great rotten mangos4backing vocals, and a cool guitar solo. The insanely good percussion on ‘Jools Share‘ is complimented by cool harmonies, a great bridge, and some wonderful effects while ‘I Left My Room‘ gives up cool vocals and changes. My favorite track, ‘Moose Knuckles‘, is simply a fantastic pop song. With a great melody, this up tempo track offers some great changes, sweet backing vocals, and a dynamite riff. Add to this a wonderful tempo change, and some cool organ, and you have The Rotten Mangos!

The psychedelic pop sound of this EP is a wonderful treat. Sort of the `1960’s meets the 21st Century. The songs are wonderful, and the instrumentation is perfect. An excellent all day listening album. Have a listen for yourself here, and grab a copy. One of those name your price downloads. Enjoy the trip!
