CLARA ENGEL-Songs For Leonora Carrington

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 21, 2017 by TheManicBlogger

The new release from Clara Engel, is wonderfully artful. The Toronto singer/songwriter’s ‘Songs For Leonora Carrington‘ is dark and introspective alternative art-rock, that sounds like musical poetry. The 5 tracks are beautifully melodic, with powerful themes that tug at your emotions. There is pump organ, flute, and theremin layered over some simple, yet very cool guitar and vocal tracks. The choir used in ‘Anubeth’s Song‘, is heavenly, while the reverb on ‘Microgods Of All The Subatomic Worlds‘ helps to create a dynamite surreal vibe.

I have listened to most of Clara Engel’s  music, and she seems to have a habit of diving headfirst into my psyche, and triggering my emotions. Not that I’m complaining. ‘Songs For Leonora Carrington’ is pure poetry. Wonderfully emotive, with melodies that soothe and caress the soul. You can stream & purchase your copy here.

Jenny & The Felines-‘Don’t Judge Me’

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 19, 2017 by TheManicBlogger

As a follow up to their 2013 album ‘Don’t Look Back‘, New Jersey’s Jenny & The Felines released the 9 track ‘Don’t Judge Me’ in March, 2017. 4 years in the making, and well worth the wait. Backed by a new clowder of cats, the disc is filled with catchy pop melodies, and is significantly more guitar focused. The songs are wonderfully written, encompassing influences from early 1960’s rock, country-blues, power pop, and rockabilly. There are memorable hooks, sweet harmonies, great changes, and way cool riffs.  The lyrics are brilliantly written, with no subject off limits, and I heard some incredible, yet subtle effects. Dynamite cat-pop! Get yourself invited to this feline fiesta, and pick up a copy. Favorite tracks: ‘Mrs. Pratt‘; ‘Jail Bird Johnny‘.

THE NURSERY-Digital Ashes

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

the nurseryOne of my favorite Toronto Indie Bands, The Nursery, recently released a 6 track EP, entitled Digital Ashes. I have been a fan  since the 2013 release of Carnival Nature, and they continue to amaze me with wonderful melodies, and socially relevant lyric. These new tracks, at times, seem more electronic, but, these guys make it work. “She Speaks The Wave” delivers a way cool riff, nice keyboards, and a wonderful 1980’s New Wave vibe. “Digital Ashes“, a wonderful electro-pop track showcases the band’s ability to write great melody lines. I dig the cool harmonies of “Ocean’s Of You“, and the dynamite effects on the  instrumental, “Xyloto’s Dream“, are like a trip down weirdly, wonderful lane. “Crystal Beach“, offers cool guitar, nice vocal effects, a dynamite melody, and some sweet keyboards, all with a wonderfully Brit Pop feel. Our Favorite track, “Hexes + Ohs“, has great guitar, and a great feel, with wonderful changes, and a dynamite vocal track, all of which remind me of something XTC. Killer track, and perhaps, a hit single!

An exceptionally fun time created by The Nursery. Wonderful songs, that seem nursery33to have grown darker over the years, but with a blend of pop, wave, and synth pop, that they have made a sound distinctively their own. Still eclectic, and eccentric, Alex Pulic‘s angst ridden vocals pull you in, and hold you there. With a flair for the musically dramatic, this album takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Yes, The Nursery continue to march to the beat of their own drummer, and let’s hope that never changes. Check it out for yourselves. Visit them on facebook. Buy the album. Go see them live.

THE MINNOWS-The Sound Of Things To Come

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 3, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

I have always been a fan of The Minnows. It began when they were still Tiberius Minnows. I have, however never been more excited by an upcoming release as I am with the current project of these Belfast rockers.

minnows55I recently had the pleasure, and the honor, of advance streaming of several tracks destined for the as yet untitled new album, set for release sometime in 2016. My comments on the material. as I reported back to the band, were simply “brilliant”, and ” devastatingly beautiful”. I am pretty certain that I also referred to one of the tracks as “I wish I had written that one”.

The Minnows have embarked on a journey into sounds that differ significantly from their previous releases. They have embraced ‘Americana‘, and have taken to it like, well, a fish to water. The tracks are filled with exceptionally beautiful melodies, enhanced by 1960’s California harmonies. There are  “twangy” guitars, and some of the most beautifully, bittersweet harmonica I have heard.  This is real heart & soul music. Wonderfully written, and executed. Brilliant indeed! It is insanely wonderful. I am not sure why The Minnows are not world famous, but this just may be the album that gives them the notoriety they deserve.

As good as the songs are, the accompanying videos for ‘Oh Man‘, and ‘What was I Supposed To Do?‘, have left me breathless, and reduced me to tears. You really need to see these. And when the album is finally released, get yourself a bunch. Play it often. Impress your friends and neighbors. Treat yourself. Feed your heart, and your soul.

To keep up with all that’s going on with the Minnows, head over to Facebook, and LIKE their page.

ATOMIC STUFF

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 31, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

atomic stuffA few months ago, I was contacted by Atomic Stuff, a hard rock/heavy metal music promotions company in Italy. Shortly after Christmas, I received several CDs in the mail. I had no idea that this  was going on in Italy!

I listened to”Wild Life“, a 9 track album from John Dallas, a guitar player whose real name is Luca Stanzani. The guitar centric, melodic metal sound offers john dallasslick riffs, and solos. The vocals and harmonies are wonderful, and the songs are well written. There are some nice solos, and cool production values. There is even a cool ballad. Favorite tracks: ‘Under Control‘, and ‘Freedom‘. If you like your rock hard and loud, this is 1 for you.

Red Morris, aka Maurizio Parisi released  “Lady Rose“, in 2015. A wonderful red morrisinsteumental progressive rock album, it offers sweet keyboards and exciting guitar. The melodies and musical themes wander in and out of the dynamite arrangements. There are cool changes and nice effects. One of those albums, that I never get tired of listening to. Favorite track: ‘My Life Blues‘, which delivers an amazingly wonderful rhythm section.

mud hornetWould You Like Something Fresh“, a release by Mad Hornet, contains 11 tracks of heavy rock, splattered with 1980s hair/glam rock sensibilities. The songs are well written, with nice changes and memorable hooks. The melodies and harmonies rock and there are some cool effects. The sound is reminiscent of something between Van Halen and Poison. Favorite tracks: ‘Dyin’ Love‘, and ‘Roses Under The Rain‘.

So, there you have it. 3 albums and artists out of Italy, being promoted by Atomic Stuff. You can check out their web site and facebook page, and the artists can be located at the sites below.. Happy listening!

THE SLEEPOVERS

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 25, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

the sleepoversI’m not certain why it took me so long to discover The Sleepovers, but the recent release of this Toronto band’s final installment of their 3 color ep series, caught my attention. So much so that I went back and listened to the other 2.

The songs are insanely good, filled with wonderful pop melodies and harmonies. There are way cool keys, some slick guitar, and a solid rhythm section. The vocals are dynamite, and there are added bonuses of hand clapping, and cool effects. The changes are great, and the bridges, exceptional. There are influences of 1980’s New Wave, Punk, and Power Pop. There are hints of funk, R & B, and electro-pop. It all works here. The elements of several genres incredibly fused with pop. It is complex simplicity. And they seem to be having a whack of fun doing it! After listening several times, I am a fan. .  Our favorite tracks across the 3 EPs: pink-“Friends Without Benefits“; blue-“Bomb“;  yellow-“Death By Misadventure“.  You need to check this band out for yourself. Really!! You can listen to the entire trilogy-2014’s pink EP, the blue EP of 2015, and the January 2016 yellow EP, and purchase them all, on Bandcamp.

PAPERWOLF-Been Five Years

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 19, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

paperwolf1Colin Marshall, ex drummer of The Toniks, has found himself in a new band, Paperwolf. The power trio from Bromley, England, recently released  “Been Five Years“, a 4 track ep filled with wonderful melodies, and some cool changes. The guitar centric sound, at times reminiscent of The James Gang, delivers powerful drumming, strong bass lines, and power chords, interspersed with great licks, cool solos, and unforgettable riffs. Wonderfully heavy, straight ahead rock. Definitely something you need to check out for yourself. Pay attention to Paperwolf- a way cool power trio with heart & soul. Favorite track: ‘Jenny‘. Listen here.
