Now that the kids have gone back to school, you may find yourself with more time to sit back and listen to something you haven’t heard before. Here is I Can’t Believe My Earz best bets for September, 2013.

sh2The Swillbilly Heroes

This Oshawa, On band released The Lamentable  Tragedy Of The… this summer on the upstart Get Bent Records. The band’s debut album contains 9 tracks that are influenced by country, rock, pop, southern rock and blues music. The album is filled with great song, layered with sounds and strong melodies. This is a killer album. Great music. Great fun.

M&MMesses & Miracles

The Captain Surely Drowns, is the latest release by London, On band, Messes & Miracles. A folk-rock band at heart, these guys write amazing songs that evoke images and tell wonderful stories. Their acoustic rock sound is refreshingly appealing  and I have been listening to this album on a daily basis. One for the collection.

1divOne Divided

Long overdue, but not overlooked, One Divided, the Oshawa On trio, released the 5 song EP, Good Reasons in 2013. With a sound influenced by Green Day, Sloan, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, I should have known I would get a raw, in your face power-pop/punk sound. The energy is electrifying. The songs melodic. Great effort and a whack of fun.

One Divided: The Boys Are Back!

Wonder what happened to in your face rock? It’s back with a vengeance, and its called One Divided,  Following the release of  their debut EP “One Divided” (2008),  the album “Shape Your Life” (2010), spawned two singles which received local radio play. The Oshawa, Ontario band’s new EP, “Good Reasons” demonstrates their growth as songwriters. The five tracks were written collaboratively by the three band members who share influences as diverse as Green Day, Sloan, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Depeche Mode.onedivided

Start Again” opens the EP as a pop song with a sense of urgency, as the melody and harmonies pull you in. The subtle instrumentation of “All The Way” allows the vocals to be the focus and delivers a kick-ass ending. “Let It Go” has a punk/grunge edge to it and could be on any Green Day album.  The title track is as close to a ballad as One Divided can get, but then it takes on a new life as a straight ahead rock song. The hard driving “Retitled” is a crafty song that starts you out on a slow river cruise and then shoves you over the rapids. Matt Silver finally brings his guitar to life and while his vocals seem forced and strained, it works. Great song! Great EP!

The EP is under produced . It doesn’t matter. It works. What we get is a product that comes as close as possible to a One Divided live performance; a raw, in your face attack. Filled with flaws, it is One Divided. The songs are filled with energy. They have catchy melodies and tight harmonies. They make you want to tap your feet. Does there really have to be anything else?  One Divided will be at Sgt. Peppers in Ajax, Ontario performing at The Molson Canadian Live! Peppers Patio Tour on June 7, 2013.
