FR3I discovered Fractal Reverb in the spring of 2014, after listening to their ‘How To Overcome The Ego Mind‘ release. Recently, this trio from Lodi, Italy released a 15 track, 2 CD album entitled ‘Songs To Overcome The Ego Mind‘.

The album is filled with songs that deliver wonderful melodies, great guitar, cool effects, and dynamite sounds of strings. There are changes in time signatures that blow my mind, and I swear I heard cello!! The off beat drumming is reminiscent of Bill Bruford, and the use of effects such as feedback, echo and fuzz conjure up a psychedelic vibe. The songs are wonderfully crafted and arranged, with music that FR2transitions in and out of various movements, and lyrics that are both  introspective and socially relevant. The vocal tracks are dynamite, with incredibly sweet harmonies. Some of the tracks appeared on the 2014 release, but I had no problem listening to them on this album. I was particularly impressed with ‘Song Of Something‘, with its off beat drumming, wonderful harmonic guitar, and great changes. ‘Hidden Places‘ excited with its multiple movements, and way cool effects, while ‘Song Of Everything‘ offered a dynamite instrumental melody, and a very cool bass line. My favorite track, ‘20th January 2013‘  is simply a beautiful piece of music, while being incredibly powerful at the same time. The sound of strings is an added bonus.

Songs To Overcome The Ego Mind is an incredible journey. Progressive Psychedelic Rock, a sort of FR1fusion of Yes, King Crimson, and Rush. The sound is wonderfully full, and complex, incorporating different orchestral themes within each track. A progressive free for all that is perfectly executed, and often unexpected. The album drives forward, taking you places that you never imagined existed. A brilliant piece of work! This is the kind of album you put on and just let it play, allowing the music to envelop you, and hold you within it. An epic sound. An epic album. Certainly one of the most incredible collections of music I have heard in a long time, and definitely on the shortlist for the I Can’t Believe My Earz Indie Album of The Year 2015!! Check it out for yourself, and then purchase at least 1.  http://fractalreverb.bandcamp.com/

JAPANESE TONGUE SISTERS-Peacock

jts33Japanese Tongue Sisters, based in Melbourne, Australia, released ‘Peacock‘, a 5 track ep in September 2015. The songs are wonderfully written, filled with amazing changes, great melodies, and wonderfully touching lyrics.

All I Can Regret‘ is excitingly acoustic, with a dynamite string sound, and terrific vocals. The keys on ‘Lose My Head‘ are wonderful, while ‘Perfect Stain‘ delivers a way cool 1980’s electro-pop vibe. ‘Heartbreak Tango‘ has some amazing piano, and I dig the echo. My favorite track, ‘Ma’s New House‘, offers a sweet acoustic track under what sounds like slide guitar, some wonderful harmonies, and a cool country feel.

The album has an ethereal feel, yet delivers a full sound. There are tasteful effects blended into an eclectic ‘Roo Pop‘ sound. A wonderful album with so much going on, it will require several listens to catch it all. Check it out for yourself, and then buy a few copies-share it with your family and friends. Christmas is coming, right?

ANDREW WAITE & THE FIRM-Burning Through The Night

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 16, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

Andrew Waite & The Firm were, until recently, unknown to me. What I heard on “Burning Through The Night“,  released in Septemeber 2015, has made me a fan. A wonderful blend of Roots, Pop, and Prince Edward Island Folk music, this band has created a sound that is intoxicating and addictive.

AW & The Firm2The way cool organ, and saxophone on ‘Someone To Hold Me‘, is a wonderfully pleasant addition to a great melody, and sweet acoustic guitar. ‘Burning Through The Night‘ offers a killer vocal track with cool harmonies, and some great changes. The mandolin on ‘Immaterial World‘ is beautifully placed among the incredibly touching lyric, subtle horns, and dynamite keys. The cool effects during the intro don’t hurt! This is the song I will be dancing with my wife to as we sway around the house!! ‘Little Bird‘ gives us wonderful organ throughout, laying just under the melody. The guitar is wonderfully acoustic, and the harmonies,  perfect. ‘Alone Apart‘ offers more saxophone among cool guitar effects, a wonderful chorus, and exceptional harmonies & backing vocals. My favorite track, ‘There’s A Light On‘ has dynamite horns, a way cool riff, and great organ. The song is insanely melodic, with a wonderful chorus. Reminiscent of Mellancamp’s “Scarecrow” days.

AWand The FirmBurning Through The Night is wonderfully soothing & melodic. A return to the singer-songwriter days, with songs filled with heartfelt stories that resonate with me. The vocals are unique, and I dig the raspiness in Andrew Waite’s voice. The arrangements rock, and the horns & organ are a delightful. Andrew Waite & The Firm could very well be the next Blue Rodeo!! A band to watch. A band to listen to!! The album is a wonderfully satisfying journey that I plan on taking regularly. I suspect that I will have to make an endless loop as I can’t see myself getting tired of this. Check it out for yourself.
