Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 12, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

sidewatcherDetroit based pop-garage-punk band, Sidewatcher, has come up with a novel idea for the release of their new album, Otra Vez. The 14 track project will be released as 7 color coded singles. The 1st 2 singles are out, released in January and February, 2016 respectively, and I like what I hear.

Keys To Your Heart‘, and ‘I Really Like You‘ appear on Otra Vez l. While Otra Vez ll, contains the songs ‘ Hey You‘, and ‘Have Love Will Travel‘. There are wonderful melodies, cool changes, and sweet vocals. I heard dynamite piano and organ, and nice riffs. The songs are pop, with a punk edge and elements of surf, garage, and psych rock. The sound is excitingly addictive. A very cool band with a very cool sound. Looking forward to the next single release! You can check SideWatcher out for yourself on their bandcamp page.

EURASIANEYES-Call Your God

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 21, 2015 by TheManicBlogger

eeyesBritish Progressive-Rock duo, Eurasianeyes are putting the finishing touches on their soon to be released album. The first single, “Call Your God“, was forwarded to me, and with luck, I actually received it. The track is up tempo, filled with exciting synthesizers, a wonderfully powerful drum track and some incredible guitar from Peter Steer, of Tenek fame. The haunting ambiance, and contagious melody  reminds me of Ultravox. Very cool. Written and produced by Eurasianeyes themselves, being Paul Russell & Mel Bell, the song is all the evidence I need to see that original progressive rock lives on.

CRAB BUBBLES-“Fool For Your Love”

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 21, 2014 by TheManicBlogger

I was fortunate to receive an advance listen to the new single by Crab Bubbles. Written by Gar Francis, “Fool For Your Love” is scheduled for a November 2014 release on New Jersey Indie label, Bongo Boy Records.

unnamedThe song has a wonderful 1960’s feel, a sort of Paul Revere & The Raiders thing going on, with its dynamite pop melody, and way cool psychedelic effects. There are great riffs, a terrific guitar solo, and a fabulous bridge. Dale Lee Richards‘ vocals are  incredibly powerful, as they sail along with some very cool harmonies. Dynamite song. Definitely one to sing along with. I could go on and on, but I think you should just go check it out for yourselves. And then come November, get yourself a copy or 2. A 1960’s classic merged with 1980’s garage.I don’t believe it gets much better than this!!  I hope there is a Crab Bubbles album!

CHRIS POPE-Dedicated Follower Of Fashion

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 21, 2014 by TheManicBlogger

I have always been a fan of Chris Pope.  From his days in The Chords, and Agent Orange, to Gatecrash Heaven and Pope. I was excited to learn that he was releasing a new album. Even more excited to hear that he had released a debut single on Bongo Boy Records, a cover of The Kinks “‘Dedicated Follower Of Fashion“, as selected by Gar Francis himself.

chris popePope’s version is wonderfully raunchy, with exciting guitar licks, and heavy drums. The vocal track is amazing, creating an ideal surface on which to layer dynamic harmonies. There are great changes and transitions, and insanely clever flourishes throughout the track. After several listens, I can’t help but wonder what the rest of the album sounds like.

The Kinks seemed like a tough act to cover, but Pope nails it here, adding a British mod-punk spin to a 50 year old song that lends itself to this interpretation perfectly. The arrangement is exciting and upbeat, with an in your face attitude. Sort of  punked out The Kinks. Very cool.. Keep your eyes and ears open for the release of the new album, ‘Peace Of Mind‘,  on Bongo Boy Records, and for upcoming North American tour dates.

You can check out/purchase “Dedicated Follower Of Fashion” from Bongo Boy Records.

PECULIAR DISCO MOVES-The Domino Effect (And More)

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 22, 2014 by TheManicBlogger

pdm3There’s something going on in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Something wonderfully strange and unusual. Its in the music. Peculiar Disco Moves, with the release of their 2013 Ep. The Domino Effect. confirms this for me.

The 3 track recording opens with “Chris“. with a great melody, and wonderful harmonies. The changes and transitions are exceptional, and the “cheeky” synthesizer adds just a hint of psych rock. I enjoy the underlying guitar, the great vocals, which have a sort of Ray Davies thing going on, and the awesome carnival theme at the song’s end. “Automatic Choice” delivers amazing piano, some way cool vocals, great harmonies, and amazing changes and transitions. There are great tempo changes, a sweet riff, pdm2and a killer bridge, all within an exceptionally unique track that owns a perfect melody. The final song, “What Did You Do Today“, offers a great bass line, within an upbeat melody. The piano and guitar are exceptional, the harmonies, beautifully sung, and the chorus is dangerously catchy.

I also listened to 2 singles. 2013’s “Joining Fee“, delivers the same wonderful harmonies, piano and changes, but surprises with some perfectly placed effects. “Lost For Words“, the most recent release, grabbed me with its off beat drumming. The way cool melody, guitar and synthesizer are dynamite, while the piano, and harmonies simply rock.

pdm1Peculiar Disco Moves have pulled me out of a cold and bleak Canadian Winter. Just in time for spring, this album has rejuvenated and reinvigorated my musical being. They are completely and utterly original, following none of the standard formulas. The music is clearly their own. Their originality borders on strangeness, but I am very cool with that. Both the music and the lyric contain that prototypical British irreverent humor found in other bands such as XTC, and Toxic Melons. The songs are incredibly well crafted, stylistic while free flowing, as if born out of themselves. The melodies are pure pop. The harmonies are straight out of the 1960’s, somewhere between The Beach Boys and The Rascals. One of my go to bands. I am impressed. I am a fan.

THE TONIKS-“Jealousy” World Premiere.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 16, 2013 by TheManicBlogger

toniks3Being the first music writer to receive an advance copy of The Toniks‘ new single, “Jealousy“, was enough to make my day. And then I listened to it. And I listened again. Amazed and impressed, with their permission, I forwarded the track to my friend, Todd Miller of Radio That Doesn’t Suck, host station of the Indie Music Show, New Music Mondays (sponsored by I Can’t Believe My Earz and co-hosted by Bobby Gottesman and Todd Miller), and he agreed to begin playing it as of today.  So, I Can’t Believe My Earz and Radio That Doesn’t Suck, did it first.

toniks2Jealousy rocks. Mark Tonik and Jez Parish continue to write songs with unforgettable melodies and wonderful harmonies. The killer hook, the heavy guitar riff and the almost hypnotizing keyboards work. The drumming impresses. Colin Marshall continues to impress me with his ability to make the complex seem simple. I love his “less is more: style”. The lyric continues in The Tonik fashion of meaningful human existence. The production excels. Nothing missing here. Pure power pop, at its best. It amazes me that these guy just keep getting better! Could just be the best thing to come out of England since The Beatles.

148To hear it, you have to listen in to Radio That Doesn’t Suck on December 16/13 for the world premiere…just before noon, 6pm and 10pm, eastern standard time. If you miss it, don’t worry. Just keep listening. It will be played regularly. Check it out. It will blow you away.

And thanks to Mark, Jez, Tom, Jessica, Colin and Graham, the man behind the scenes, for having the trust and faith to allow me to be the first. As always, it is a pleasure to call you all friends.

WE CAN BE HEROES-Where I Want To Be

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 27, 2013 by TheManicBlogger

wcbh2From the hometown of Garth Hudson (The Band), Skip Spence (Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape) and Jeff Martin (The Tea Party), Windsor, Ontario’s, We Can Be Heroes are plotting their own course for success. Currently devoting themselves to perfecting their live show and increasing their fan base, this power-pop band released their six track EP, Where I Want To Be, in 2011.

Jack Links” has a great melody, with vocals supported by bass and drums which allows the vocal track to be highlighted. Guitar and harmonies are added at the chorus. The rhythm section is heavy but there is a nice guitar riff throughout. The slower tempo of “Violet, You’re Turning Violet“, allows Josh Peltier‘s voice to take command of the melody. Great drum shots and  harmonies make this a powerful song with a punk-rock feel. “We Break Deals And Bones” opens with simple guitar picking, followed by  military like drum rolls, while the powerful guitar chords add fullness to the song. The power pop-punk style of “Cigarettes“, showcases the heavy drumming of Doug Huha, while the guitar harmonics sustain the melody. “Ego” has strong vocals and a solid melody but its the harmonies that shine in  this song. The best track on the album, “Changing With The Seasons” has an exceptional melody, the driving guitars of Chris Holt and Tyler Shelson, heavy cymbals and incredibly strong harmonies to support the vocal track.  Great song!

wcbh1I also listened to “Movements“, a single the band released in 2012. Less melodic than the earlier EP, it leans more towards punk-rock. Musically very strong with a great rock ending, it lacks the subtle pop qualities of “Changing With The Seasons“.

A solid band with a solid sound. Where I Want To Be is a fun listen. We Can Be Heroes have great potential and the ability to write good songs. They bring strong vocals, pop melodies and wonderful harmonies to their music. Certainly worth a couple of listens and a live show or two. You can see them live on August 2 in Windsor, and on August 8 in London, On.
