Sedge-‘Psychochondriac’

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 9, 2018 by TheManicBlogger

Its been 2 1/2 years since the release of ‘Selective Reasoning‘, but after listening to ‘Psychochrondria’, the latest album from Toronto band Sedge, I can assure you it was well worth the wait.

There are incredibly cool riffs and solos, courtesy of the guitar triad of James Heron, Rob Coffey & Dean Crone that linger long after they have been played. Brian Regan‘s wonderful bass lines, coupled with Mitch Heron‘s kick ass drums provided a killer low end that accentuates James Heron’s powerful vocals. The songs are melodic and powerful with exciting changes. There are hints of blues, rock,  garage and psych rock all melded into one glorious trip, with dynamite effects. The album plays like a psychodrama, covered in a layer of fuzz, with so much going on that one listen is just not enough. The wonderfully full sound pushes limits and seems to touch the primal core, reverberating in my head like a ping pong ball, a sort of nervous breakdown in song. A wonderful time that needs to played loud. Exceptionally loud. Favorite tracks include ‘Somnolent Surrender‘, ‘Death Bed Proposal‘, ‘Fuzzy Pictures‘ and the unanimous favorite around ICBME, ‘Farewell Horizontal‘. You can check Psychochondriac yourself on Bandcamp, and I recommend you catch them live whenever possible. They will be at the Bovine in Toronto on April 22.

CLARA ENGEL-Songs For Leonora Carrington

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 21, 2017 by TheManicBlogger

The new release from Clara Engel, is wonderfully artful. The Toronto singer/songwriter’s ‘Songs For Leonora Carrington‘ is dark and introspective alternative art-rock, that sounds like musical poetry. The 5 tracks are beautifully melodic, with powerful themes that tug at your emotions. There is pump organ, flute, and theremin layered over some simple, yet very cool guitar and vocal tracks. The choir used in ‘Anubeth’s Song‘, is heavenly, while the reverb on ‘Microgods Of All The Subatomic Worlds‘ helps to create a dynamite surreal vibe.

I have listened to most of Clara Engel’s  music, and she seems to have a habit of diving headfirst into my psyche, and triggering my emotions. Not that I’m complaining. ‘Songs For Leonora Carrington’ is pure poetry. Wonderfully emotive, with melodies that soothe and caress the soul. You can stream & purchase your copy here.

THE NURSERY-Digital Ashes

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

the nurseryOne of my favorite Toronto Indie Bands, The Nursery, recently released a 6 track EP, entitled Digital Ashes. I have been a fan  since the 2013 release of Carnival Nature, and they continue to amaze me with wonderful melodies, and socially relevant lyric. These new tracks, at times, seem more electronic, but, these guys make it work. “She Speaks The Wave” delivers a way cool riff, nice keyboards, and a wonderful 1980’s New Wave vibe. “Digital Ashes“, a wonderful electro-pop track showcases the band’s ability to write great melody lines. I dig the cool harmonies of “Ocean’s Of You“, and the dynamite effects on the  instrumental, “Xyloto’s Dream“, are like a trip down weirdly, wonderful lane. “Crystal Beach“, offers cool guitar, nice vocal effects, a dynamite melody, and some sweet keyboards, all with a wonderfully Brit Pop feel. Our Favorite track, “Hexes + Ohs“, has great guitar, and a great feel, with wonderful changes, and a dynamite vocal track, all of which remind me of something XTC. Killer track, and perhaps, a hit single!

An exceptionally fun time created by The Nursery. Wonderful songs, that seem nursery33to have grown darker over the years, but with a blend of pop, wave, and synth pop, that they have made a sound distinctively their own. Still eclectic, and eccentric, Alex Pulic‘s angst ridden vocals pull you in, and hold you there. With a flair for the musically dramatic, this album takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Yes, The Nursery continue to march to the beat of their own drummer, and let’s hope that never changes. Check it out for yourselves. Visit them on facebook. Buy the album. Go see them live.

THE CORSETS-Monta Sanica

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 10, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

thecorsets4Toronto blues-rockers, The Corsets, recently ( May 2016) released a 4 track ep, cleverly titled “Monta Sanica“. The songs are powerful, with catchy melodies, great changes, and wonderful harmonies. There are way cool riffs, nice keyboards, and some dynamite effects. The rhythm section is insanely good, and the vocals are exceptional. A wonderful time with the blues. Definitely something you need to check out 3 or 4 times right here. Favorite track: ‘Fire Burnin‘.

CLARA ENGEL-Visitors Are Allowed One Kiss

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 15, 2016 by TheManicBlogger

The 5 track album, Visitors Are Allowed One Kiss, released by Clara Engel in April 2016, has captivated and fascinated me. The Toronto cesinger/songwriter/musician has delivered an exciting, and yes, eccentric, collection of songs that I have not been able to stop listening to. There are hauntingly beautiful melodies, enhanced by a minimalist approach, that is  both soothing and exciting, and serene, yet intoxicating. The simplistic complexity of the avant-garde folk-blues, creates powerful emotions and images. There are wonderfully cool instruments being played; bowed baritone guitar, auto harp, vibes, theremin, as well as  violin, saxophone, and xylophone. The vocals tracks are exceptional, while the sound is uniquely original, fusing Delta Blues, Folk, and Alternative. There is so much going on in here, that it requires numerous listens to integrate the essence of what has been created. I could listen to this all day. Could very well contend for I Can’t Believe My Earz Indie Album Of The Year for 2016. Highly recommended that you check out this, and all of Clara Engel’s other releases out on her bandcamp page.
