With the somewhat disturbing and unpredictable weather we  experienced in July, there was ample opportunity to stay indoors and listen to some amazing music created by Independent artists. Here are our picks for the MUST HAVE CANADIAN INDIE ALBUMS for July 2013.

yb2YOUNG BENJAMINS

These Saskatoon natives write amazingly well crafted songs and execute them to perfection. Incorporating pop rock, blues and middle eastern influences, Less Argue delivers. Strong vocals, great melodies and tremendous musical insight allows this young band to make the kind of album they want to make. Esoteric, eclectic and entertaining..  Ten tracks take you places you never knew you could get to. A must for every collection. JANE’S PARTYjane's party1

This Toronto quartet released their album, Hot Noise just in time for summer. Loaded with pop-rock songs, the album is highlighted by the intricate melodies and sophisticated harmonies. Dance-able, singable and enjoyable. Somewhere between The Kinks and The Beach Boys, Jane’s Party is an event not to be missed. Purchase at https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/hot-noise/id647398702

Toniks1THE TONIKS.

About to be released in September,  Rise And Shine is a trip back to 1965, London. Influenced by The Beatles, Badfinger and Squeeze, this UK band has perfected the sound that filled the airwaves 47 years ago. Packed with tracks that deal with life, love and human relations, this is a fun filled trip to a simpler time. Amazing melodies, wonderful harmonies combined with horns and strings, each song is pop perfection. If you purchase nothing else this year, purchase this. A definite must have. The album will be available through iTunes and directly through The Toniks website.

SONS OF REVELRY-BORN WITH A BIGGA GOAL

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 28, 2013 by TheManicBlogger

I am not certain what has come out of Brantford, Ontario other than Wayne Gretzky and Phil Hartman, but Sons Of Revelry may just be their greatest export since the Great One himself. Their recently released debut EP, “Born With A Bigga Goal” is getting the band exposure beyond their local fan base.

SOR2Born With A Bigga Goal“, has an incredibly powerful riff that avoids being overbearing. The steady rhythm section contrasts the screaming guitars. The song transforms itself in the last 30 seconds into an in your face anthem. “Time” is a great pop song.  The powerful vocal  and the great melody line make this the album’ s single.  It is danceable, singable and enjoyable. It is simply played yet complex in its construction and arrangement. A very cool song with nice harmonies and a Beatlesque ending.  The bluesy feel to “Whiskey” allows us to hear Toby’s vocals at their best while choppy guitar chords are played under very stylish picking’  This song has a much slower tempo and I kept waiting for it to burst open. When it does,  just after the first chorus, it explodes into a much rockier song. It has a 1967, San Francisco music scene, guitar thing going on. There are UK sensibilities here as well, and you can hear just how much fun these guys are really having. My pick as best song on the EP.

These guys are young. Thee guys are enthusiastic and energetic. They are grateful to be able to make music and have people listen. There is no attitude, no ego and I find it  refreshing. This is how music is supposed to be;  all about the music, and the music speaks for itself. The only issue I have with Born With A Bigga Goal is that there are not more tracks on it. This band writes good songs and makes them sound great. And they have a whole lot of fun doing it.

To see Sons Of Revelry, they will be playing at Two Doors Down in Brantford on July 13, 2013.
